Initial Evaluation– The initial 60 minute interview is an information gathering appointment which takes into consideration the client’s current difficulties, history and goals. In this way an appropriate treatment plan is developed.

Children/Play Therapy

Parenting Education

Parent coaching assists parents with every day with dilemmas related to raising children including:
– Respectful communication in the home.
– How to handle young children’s fears and anxiety.
– Setting appropriate boundaries and limits developing behavior plans to implement at home.
– Anger management in children and parents.

“Children need to be emotionally met at their own level using a developmentally appropriate approach”.

Psychotherapy helps children in a variety of ways. They receive emotional support, learn how to resolve conflicts with people, learn to understand their feelings and why they behave in certain ways.

In this way they find solutions to problems. Goals for therapy may be specific (changes in behavior, improved relations with friends or family, improved study habits and organizational skills), or more general (less anxiety, improved confidence and self-esteem). The length of psychotherapy depends on the complexity and severity of problems.

Play Therapy

Creative Solutions for kids! Geared toward young children, this technique uses a variety of activities such as artwork, play and puppets, story telling, board games and more in order to establish communication with the therapist and then resolve problems. Play allows the child to express and work through emotions and problems that may be too difficult to process elsewhere. Debra uses sand tray therapy in which children are able to create a story and work through their feelings using miniature figures in a tray of sand. Older children utilize the sand tray, story telling, drawing as well as talking with the therapist.

Man is most nearly himself when he achieves the seriousness of a child at play ~ Heraclitus

Children need to be emotionally met at THEIR level using a developmentally appropriate approach. Play is the way in which children communicate. They are not simply little adults. Their world is very different from ours and to reach them we need to “speak their language” …the language of play.Recent studies find that PLAY THERAPY regulates emotions, reduces anxiety and depression, improves self esteem and fosters learning. Additionally, it promotes problem solving skills and creative thinking.

It is the essential Nature of man to play ~ Plato
